We take a look at some B-town celebs who have gotten inked, whether temporarily or permanently…
Tattoos are nothing new. In fact, tattooing has been practised by communities across the world for centuries, now. There are even examples of tattoos on ancient mummies. The oldest of the lot is ‘Oetzi the Iceman’, who was buried under an alpine glacier a whopping 5,300 years ago!
Tattoos have come a long way since Oetzi, though. This week, we thought we’d take a look at some of Bollywood’s best, who have gotten inked, whether in real or reel life.
The Khiladi Kumar sported a couple of tattoos for his role in Brothers (2015), which was a remake of the Hollywood blockbuster, Warrior. Akshay played the role of David Fernandes, a Physics teacher who takes up street fighting to raise money to pay his daughter’s medical bills. In addition to a temporary tattoo of Jesus on his arm, the actor sported a cross on his wrist.
In real life, the action star reportedly has wife Twinkle’s nickname ‘Tina’ tattooed on his chest, daughter Nitara’s name tattooed on his left shoulder and son Aaarav’s name tattooed on his on his upper back.
Ranbir’s gotten temporary tats for more than one role. In last year’s period-crime flick Bombay Velvet, he, like Akshay, got a cross temporarily inked on his wrist. In the movie, Ranbir played the role of Balraj, a boxer in the 1960s, who falls in love with a jazz singer. The actor had earlier sported a temporary ‘awaara’ tatooo (in Devanagari script) for the rom-com Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani (2013).
It seems Deepika’s tired of answering questions about one of her permanent tattoos. The Indian beauty got ‘RK’ inked on the nape of her neck, in honour of her former beau, Ranbir Kapoor, while the two were still in a relationship. Following their break-up, she had the tattoo modified to ‘TMK’, reportedly an abbreviation of ‘Tees Maar Khan’. The actress later got her own initials, ‘DP’, tattooed in a vine motif on her ankle.
In reel life, the actress flaunted a large cobra tattoo, when she made a special appearance in the title song of the film Dum Maaro Dum (2011).
Anushka Sharma’s tattoo in 2013’s Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola attracted a lot of publicity. The cheeky tattoo, which read ‘dekho magar pyaar se’, was temporarily inked on her lower back. It was a fitting tribute to her character, Bijlee, who was an outspoken girl from the village.
Interestingly, director Vishal Bharadwaj revealed while promoting the film that he initially wanted the tattoo to read, ‘buri nazarwale tera mooh kala’, but later settled for ‘dekho magar pyaar se’, upon Anushka’s request.
She’s busy conquering Hollywood, at the mo, but Piggy Chops has set the screen alight in Bollywood for years now. It might surprise you to know just how dedicated the actress is to her craft. For the number ‘Ram Chahe Leela’ in 2013’s Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela, the actress reportedly sat for 10 hours—yes, you read that right!—while makeup artists painted a temporary tattoo in the Devanagari script, just below her choli.
In real life, Pee Cee paid tribute to her beloved father, before he passed away, with a tattoo on her wrist, which reads, ‘Daddy’s lil girl’.
Ajay Devgn has a few permanent tattoos on his body. He has a large Lord Shiva tattoo on his chest, to which he added his daughter’s name, ‘Nysa’, a few years ago. Since then, the devoted Dad has reportedly added son Yug’s name, too.
The actor was also seen sporting a temporary tat of a Trishul on his neck for Golmaal 3 (2010).
This young man, who’s a big fan of wrestler-actor Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, sported Rock-inspired tattoos on his left shoulder, chest and biceps for his dance number, ‘Saturday Saturday’, in Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya (2014). Varun was so excited about the look that, before the release of the film, he had tweeted, “Tattoo has signs of @TheRock @WWERomanReigns”. Varun even received a compliment from The Rock, himself!
Also, in 2015’s ABCD 2, Varun donned a Michael Jackson tattoo, as a tribute to the late singer who was a dance sensation. This tattoo was inspired by director Remo D’Souza’s own real-life tattoo of MJ.
There was a time in history—not so long ago, actually—when tattoos were linked with the underworld and criminal gangs. There are still some places, today, where they play an important role in mafia and gang cultures.
So, it wasn’t much of a stretch when actor Sidharth Malhotra got three temporary tats on his arm, shoulder and neck, when he played the part of Guru, a former hitman avenging his wife’s murder in 2014’s Ek Villain. The tattoos certainly added to his ‘hardened criminal’ persona in the movie.
Saif Ali Khan
To say it was big news, when Saif Ali Khan got ‘Kareena’ tattooed on his arm, in honour of his beloved, would be an understatement. It’s probably the one Bollywood celeb tattoo that everyone who knows about! The Nawab hadn’t tied the knot with Bebo, at the time of getting her name prominently inked on his left arm, but that didn’t stop him.
Kareena, on her part, commented last year that she’s not very keen on tattoos and has no intention of getting one herself. Well… All’s fair in love and war, as they say!
